Dr. Martens

The story of Dr. Martens starts with field medic Klaus Märtens, who at the tail end of WWII discovered that his army-issue boots could not support a broken ankle. With important innovations such as a air-dampened sole made with recycled rubber, British shoemakers soon became interested and production started in Northamptonshire. Whereas the early adopters had been postmen, factory workers and gardeners, Dr. Martens later became a cult icon for Ska musicians, punks and grungers.
